Why We Need Tension, Stress & Trauma Release Exercises (TRE®)?

TRE® stands for Tension, Stress and Trauma Releasing Exercises. It is a natural way to relax, return to balance and feel good. This incredible therapeutic technique helps you tap into your body's innate wisdom to release stored physical and emotional tension, stress, or trauma.

It can alleviate stress and tension related physical pain, like headaches, back and hip pain, and improve sleep qualityAll in all, it is a great way of enhancing your resilience, wellness and vitality!

​TRE® was developed by Dr. David Berceli, a trauma recovery specialist, and is based on the concept that the body has a natural mechanism to release stress and trauma through shaking or tremoring.

​

It’s important to know that trauma isn’t always about one big, dramatic event. Anything that was too much, too fast, or too overwhelming for too long — like illness, financial stress, ongoing emotional neglect, or not getting what you needed early in life — can leave an imprint on your nervous system. In TRE, trauma release doesn’t just refer to "big T" traumas, but also the subtle, cumulative experiences that may have shaped how safe, connected or grounded you feel in your body and in the world.

Who is TRE® for?
Chronic stress, pain and trauma live in the body — so does the way out.

​​​

TRE® can be helpful for a wide range of people, including:

  • those looking to improve overall physical relaxation and emotional wellbeing,

  • individuals dealing with chronic stress, anxiety, insomnia or poor sleep,

  • people who experience chronic pain (like migraines, fibromyalgia or arthritis), muscle tension, or physical discomfort or even illnesses, such as IBS and eczema, and

  • people suffering from suppressed emotions or trauma survivors (including PTSD, C-PTSD, developmental trauma, accidents)​.​

TRE® can be used by people of all ages and on their own as well, but it is advised that you first learn it with a certified TRE® practitioner, who can safely guide you through the process. This is especially important when dealing with traumas, movement limitations, or pain.

It is contraindicated to utilize TRE®â€‹ if you have epilepsy, seizures, are currently pregnant, within the last 3 months have gone through an open wound surgery or given birth.

​

No talking is required, which makes TRE® accessible for individuals who may have preverbal traumas, or for some other reason, struggle with verbal therapy. That also makes TRE® safe regarding the risks of re-traumatization.

​How is a TRE® session like?

The body shakes what the mind and words cannot.

​​​​​

We engage in exercises that activate the body's muscle tremors, which are a natural reflex of the nervous system. These exercises are designed to safely bring the body into a state where it can begin to release deeply stored tension, stress and trauma.

We progress at a pace and in a manner that is right for you, and you are always in control of the movement, so you can stop it whenever you wantIf you're new to TRE, we start with shorter tremors and gradually increase the duration and intensity as you feel comfortable. 

​​​

Each individual reacts in a unique manner, so all reactions from shaking and yawning to laughing or crying are possible. After TRE®, some feel more energized whereas others are more relaxed, calm or sleepy. Most people notice shifts immediately, but it might also take a few days to see the effects. In any case, the body is integrating the experience 1–2 days.


Usually, sessions take place with video connection (Zoom) but there are in person options in Helsinki as well. You need a quiet space where family members or devices don’t disturb you and comfortable clothes and surface to be on.

Please be mindful that if you have an infection or inflammation in your body on the day of the TRE® session, you should reschedule your session to a later day.
